Afeni Prioritizes Eye Health for Ogun I Customs Personnel
In a bid to enhance operational efficiency and safeguard personnel welfare, Acting Customs Area Controller of Ogun I Area Command, Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Afeni, has sponsored a comprehensive free eye care programme for officers and men of the command.
The initiative, organized in partnership with VisionSpring under its See to Be Safe (S2S) project, offered professional eye examinations—including visual acuity screening and funduscopy—and provided free prescription glasses to officers diagnosed with vision challenges.
Speaking at the launch, Afeni stressed the critical role of healthy eyesight in Customs operations, noting that sharp vision is indispensable for border surveillance, tactical enforcement, cargo inspections, and administrative duties.
“Good health remains the foundation of operational efficiency. Our personnel face demanding assignments daily, often under harsh conditions that strain their eyesight. Regular eye examinations help detect problems early, prevent fatigue, and ensure officers remain fit for duty,” he said.
He urged officers to make routine eye screening a personal priority, emphasizing that good vision supports not only career performance but also personal safety, family life, and long-term well-being.
Dr. Obioma Uchandu, Team Lead Consultant for the S2S project, explained that the programme aims to promote preventive eye care and reduce avoidable blindness, particularly among frontline personnel deployed to strategic border posts such as Idiroko.
Beneficiaries of the exercise expressed gratitude to the command leadership, describing the initiative as timely and morale-boosting.
The Ogun I Area Command reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining welfare programmes that strengthen the health, resilience, and effectiveness of its workforce while advancing the Nigeria Customs Service’s mandate of securing the nation’s borders.
