When Legitimate Businesses Grow, Customs Grows, Says CGC Adeniyi
Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) Adewale Adeniyi has reaffirmed the Nigeria Customs Service’s (NCS) commitment to facilitating legitimate trade and supporting compliant businesses. He assured Renaissance Africa Energy Limited of continued partnership in driving investment, energy security, and national economic growth.
Speaking on 8 July 2026 during a courtesy visit by Renaissance’s management, Adeniyi congratulated the company on its successful corporate transition, noting it reflects Nigerians’ capacity to manage strategic national assets. He emphasized that Customs exists to enable lawful trade, not hinder it, and highlighted ongoing reforms under the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) that are improving Nigeria’s business climate.
“When legitimate businesses grow, Customs also grows. Our responsibility is to facilitate lawful trade while carrying out our statutory mandate,” Adeniyi said.
He encouraged Renaissance to complete the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) Programme, stressing its benefits for compliant traders, and pledged continued removal of trade bottlenecks.
Renaissance Vice President, Production, Meshack Maichibi, explained that the company assumed operations in March 2026 after acquiring Shell Petroleum Development Company’s onshore assets. He praised Customs’ speed of approvals, professionalism, and digitalized processes, affirming Renaissance’s zero tolerance for duty evasion.
The delegation commended Customs’ reforms, describing the AEO certification process as rigorous yet transparent, and noted that improved digital systems and officer engagement have strengthened compliance and efficiency.
