MWUN Loses Comrade Johnbull Okhiria
The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria mourns the passing of Comrade Johnbull Okhiria (JB), who died in Lagos after a brief illness. His remains have been laid to rest in the mortuary.
Fondly called JB by colleagues and admirers, he dedicated his entire career to the Union, rising through the ranks as Unit Chairman, District Organising Secretary, District Chairman, and later serving two terms as Vice President of the Dockworkers Branch under Comrade (Prince) Dr. Adewale Adeyanju. His last appointment was as Special Adviser to the Union’s President-General.
With his towering presence and unwavering spirit, JB was a fighter for justice and unity. He gave his all to strengthen the Union, helping to secure the peace and stability it enjoys today. A staunch dockworker, rugged in duty yet soft-spoken in character, he embodied the qualities of a thoroughbred unionist whose legacy will remain indelible.
Comrade Okhiria hailed from Auchi in Edo State, where he completed his early education before moving to Lagos to pursue his trade union career. He was respected for his discipline, obedience, humor, and humility. As Comrade Francis Bunu Abi noted, JB was “respectful, calculative, and a jolly good fellow devoid of tribalism — a rare gem.”
He leaves behind his wife and children, and the Union prays that his gentle soul rests in perfect peace. His memory will forever inspire future generations of workers to remain united in the struggle.
