Woman Nabbed Smuggling ‘Colos’ to Son on Death Row in Ogun

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Ogun State Command, has arrested Mrs Iyabo Sowunmi for allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ibara, Abeokuta, for her son, Dare Sowunmi, who is currently on death row.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 1:33 p.m. last Friday during a routine screening exercise at the main entrance of the custodial facility.

The Command’s spokesperson, Olayinka Odukoya, disclosed the arrest in a statement issued on Monday, stating that the suspected substance, believed to be a psychoactive synthetic drug popularly known as “Colos,” was allegedly concealed inside a sachet of a popular beverage powder.

According to Odukoya, the package was allegedly intended for Dare Sowunmi, who is being held at the facility.

“Routine screening procedures at the facility’s main entry point led to the detection of suspicious substances, believed to be the psychoactive synthetic drug commonly known as ‘Colos’,” Odukoya said.

He said Mrs Sowunmi was immediately apprehended following the discovery and subsequently handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Reacting to the incident, the Controller of Corrections in Ogun State, Abioye Adesina, commended officers of the command for their vigilance and strict adherence to established security procedures.

Adesina said correctional facilities were designed not only to protect society but also to provide opportunities for the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates.

He stressed that the command would continue to maintain zero tolerance for drug trafficking and other activities capable of compromising security within custodial centres.

The Controller also warned members of the public against attempts to smuggle prohibited items into correctional facilities, noting that anyone found engaging in such acts would face the full weight of the law.
