NIMASA Reiterates Commitment to Seafarers’ Wellbeing, Career Advancement
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare, working conditions, and professional development of Nigerian seafarers through enhanced collaboration with the Mission to Seafarers (MtS).
This renewed partnership was underscored during a courtesy visit to NIMASA’s Lagos headquarters by Chief Adebayo Sarumi, OON, Chairman of the Management Committee of Mission to Seafarers Lagos, and Reverend Cedric Rautenbach, Regional Director of Mission to Seafarers Africa.
Speaking on behalf of NIMASA’s Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, the Agency’s Executive Director of Operations, Engr. Fatai Taiye Adeyemi, emphasized that NIMASA will continue to work closely with maritime stakeholders to implement policies that safeguard seafarers’ wellbeing and support their career advancement.
“We will continue to collaborate with stakeholders such as the Mission to Seafarers to ensure that seafarers receive the support they deserve both at sea and in port,” Adeyemi stated.
Chief Sarumi commended NIMASA’s ongoing reforms in the maritime sector and reaffirmed MtS’s dedication to providing welfare, pastoral care, and practical support to seafarers worldwide. He expressed optimism that stronger collaboration with NIMASA would further enhance welfare services for maritime professionals in Nigeria.
Reverend Rautenbach highlighted the complementary roles of MtS and the Port Welfare Committee, stressing that closer cooperation among stakeholders would strengthen support systems for seafarers calling at Nigerian ports.
The meeting provided a platform to address key issues affecting seafarers, including welfare, decent working conditions, and opportunities for enhanced collaboration to improve support services across Nigeria’s maritime industry.
NIMASA continues to champion initiatives that protect the rights and welfare of Nigerian seafarers in line with the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), 2006, through stronger regulatory oversight, stakeholder engagement, and policies that promote decent work and professional development.
