XChat: Musk’s Privacy-Focused Messaging App Challenges WhatsApp, Telegram

Elon Musk’s X has introduced XChat, a standalone messaging app designed to rival WhatsApp and Telegram by offering private communication without requiring a phone number. The launch reflects Musk’s broader ambition to transform X into an “everything app” that integrates social networking, payments, AI, and more.

XChat allows users to sign in with existing X accounts — no separate phone number or identity needed. It features end-to-end encryption, PIN protection, disappearing messages, and screenshot alerts.
The platform supports private and group chats, file sharing, audio and video calls.
It has ability to edit or delete messages for all participants. No ads or tracking mechanisms at launch.

Despite its privacy-first positioning, cybersecurity experts have raised questions about XChat’s encryption model.
Researchers flagged weaknesses in the PIN-based protection system. Kaspersky highlighted transparency issues compared to established platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram.

It’s initially released for iOS 26+ (iPhone and iPad) with Android version not available at launch. By September 2026, XChat disappeared from both Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store. The reason for removal remains undisclosed, though reports suggest X itself pulled the listings.

XChat was intended as a cornerstone of Musk’s vision for X — a unified digital ecosystem combining
messaging and social networking, payments via X Money, and AI-driven services.

Its sudden disappearance raises questions about whether X is reworking the app’s security foundations or shifting strategy. If development resumes, XChat could still emerge as a major competitor in the encrypted messaging space.
