MWUN Secures Landmark Resolution Over Death of Comrade Okwuwa Chinedu Godwin

The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), under the leadership of its President-General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has achieved a landmark resolution regarding the tragic death of Comrade Okwuwa Chinedu Godwin, a union member and employee of GMS Recruitment Services Limited.

Comrade Godwin passed away on March 18, 2024, after contracting an illness while serving onboard a vessel. Although the incident occurred prior to Comrade Abi’s emergence as President-General, he pursued the matter with vigour, resilience, and strict adherence to labor laws, ensuring justice was delivered in line with international maritime standards.

Following MWUN’s intervention and negotiations, GMS Recruitment Services Limited complied with the Union’s demands in accordance with Protection and Indemnity (P&I) provisions. This outcome reflects MWUN’s strengthened capacity under Comrade Abi’s pragmatic leadership to safeguard the welfare and rights of maritime workers.

Comrade Abi expressed appreciation to GMS Recruitment Services for their cooperation, emphasizing that “human lives matter when it comes to death in any way it may have occurred.”

The family of the late Comrade Godwin also commended MWUN’s leadership for handling the matter with fairness and compassion, bringing the issue to a reasonable and amicable conclusion.
