Group Applauds NPA’s Launch of Multi-Agency Task Force to Tackle Port Gridlock, Hopes It’ll Lead to Free-flow of Traffic

The Media Anti-Corruption Initiatives (MACI) has commended the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) for inaugurating a multi-agency task force to address the resurgence of congestion along Lagos port access roads.
MACI, known for its advocacy on Nigeria’s economic and political reforms, had earlier raised alarm over the return of gridlock on the corridor. The group expressed hope that the initiative will deliver genuine relief rather than cosmetic measures, ensuring free-flow of traffic around the ports.
The task force, unveiled by NPA Managing Director Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho during a stakeholders’ meeting, brings together security agencies, freight forwarders, truck operators, and representatives of the Lagos State Government. Stakeholders identified key causes of congestion, including illegal extortion points, overlapping agency roles, and operational disruptions.
NPA’s General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications, Mr. Ikechukwu Onyemakara, emphasized that the Authority’s priority is seamless cargo movement. He explained that the task force will monitor truck traffic, swiftly address disruptions, and avoid setting up checkpoints that could worsen delays. Instead, members will be strategically positioned to enforce compliance.
To enhance coordination, a dedicated WhatsApp group has been created for real-time reporting of violations or emerging traffic issues. Onyemakara also noted that the renewal of the Electronic Truck Call-Up (ETO) system contract is under review to strengthen its framework, even as the platform continues to operate under Truck Transit Parks (TTP).
Reaffirming NPA’s commitment, Onyemakara said: “We are more invested in the smooth flow of logistics into our ports than anyone else because it benefits us directly. With the international recognition we are receiving, including from the World Bank, we are determined to exceed the improvements already achieved.”
While welcoming the initiative, MACI reiterated its call for urgent clearance of the port access roads and pledged to keep monitoring developments. The group warned it would not hesitate to raise further concerns if the joint effort fails to meet the needs of the port environment.
