NAGAFF Urges Tinubu to Extend Customs Officers’ Retirement

The National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to extend the retirement date of senior Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) officers scheduled to leave in December 2026.

In an open letter titled “The Matter of Mass Due Retirement of Seasoned Management Officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS)”, signed by Secretary General Mr. Godfrey Nwosu, the association requested a one-year extension for all officers due to retire.

NAGAFF argued that a sudden mass retirement would destabilize the service. The extra year would allow younger officers to be properly trained and prepared for leadership roles.

Customs, it noted, is a strategic institution directly involved in 1implementing Nigeria’s fiscal and trade policies.

The association raised concerns that
Nigeria risks becoming a dumping ground for fake and adulterated products, due to lapses in trade regulation and the sidelining of agencies such as SON, NAFDAC, and NESREA.

The association warned that losing experienced officers “in one swoop” could undermine Tinubu’s economic reform agenda.

NAGAFF praised the President’s courage in removing petroleum subsidies and urged him to remain steadfast in fighting corruption, noting:

“We know that when you pursue corruption, the return is that corruption shall pursue you. Remain strong at heart in the interest of Nigerians.”

The letter was also sent to Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, Founder of NAGAFF, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, President of the Senate and Comptroller General of Customs.
